In 2001, Ulysse Nardin watch-producing company introduced one-of-a-kind wristwatch, which was a real shock for the Haute Horlogerie industry. It is vital to clarify that the community of high-end timepiece admirers experienced such a shock not only because of the unusual design of the model with the provocative title “Freak,” but mainly because it was the first luxury watch equipped with a mechanism using parts made of silicon – a very controversial material for that time.
Almost every detail was new in the Freak time device: the fact that instead of the minute hand was used flying carousel tourbillon, and that this luxury watch had to be winded by rotating the back cover, while for the time setting you had to rotate the bezel. Silicon, which, again, was initially treated with caution, for 18 years has found application in hundreds of exquisite wristwatches, appreciated for the excellent antimagnetic quality and the ability to make the watch mechanism more accurate and resistant to wear.
As a part of Geneva watch salon SIHH 2019, Ulysse Nardin brand introduced a new version of its most innovative model, called Freak X. Being more affordable than the original Freak luxury watch, this year’s Freak X timepieces became a kind of entry point to the collection, along with the Freak Out and Freak Vision models. Although in the new watch the appearance of the Freak time device has undergone some changes. First of all, its case was reduced from 45 to 43 millimeters, the use of the traditional screw-down crown instead of the innovative trick with the back cover, a simplified version of the caliber UN-118 as a mechanism. Despite all abovementioned innovations, the key characteristics of this luxury watch – an open mechanism and a flying tourbillon instead of a minute hand – remained intact.
Paying tribute to its pioneering role in the development of silicon technology, Ulysse Nardin company introduced another Freak X model, which brought silicon from the depths of the mechanism to the surface. The dial of this unique wristwatch represents a complex mosaic of silicon, cut into fragments using a plasma accelerator. Fragile collage consists of approximately 120 silicon fragments assembled by hand.
New model Ulysse Nardin Freak X Silicium Marquetry will be available in two versions: in the case of titanium with blue PVD-coating and a gold-plated letter “X” in the pattern of the dial, as well as in titanium case with black DLC-coating and silver letter “X” on a purple-blue background. The caliber UN-230 equipped with a self-winding movement and amazing 72-hour power reserve ensures the precise operation of the luxury watch that is offered to wear on the alligator leather strap. The estimated cost of the model is €29,500.
